Madie Maier

Madie Maier is an artist based in Brooklyn, NY. She received her BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University from the Department of Craft and Materials Studies. She has recently exhibited work at Peters Valley School of Craft, Quirk Gallery, and in Ethical Metalsmith’s So Fresh + So Clean exhibition. Maier makes playful, toy inspired objects, with a focus on jewelry. By fabricating cages to entrap glass marbles she creates game-like experiences. In recent bodies, Maier blurs the lines between wearability and play by incorporating magnets in rings with the concept that there are endless ways to build and arrange wearables without finite instructions. Apart from the studio, she also teaches K-5 students at Brooklyn Robot Foundry how to use hand tools and incorporate circuitry in art. Maier finds inspiration in the classroom and encourages playful experimentation as an essential part in both learning and making. Maier has completed an assistantship and subsequent residency at Peters Valley School of Craft, and has been selected to be a resident artist at the Baltimore Jewelry Center.
