Wax Working Projects: Gemstone Settings

 Class Description

Taught by Shuoyuan Bai.

This course is an introduction to the various approaches to creating gemstone settings in wax for jewelry. Wax working allows for design flexibility and this class will accommodate a cabochon and a faceted gemstone. Using subtractive sculpting with carving wax and additive methods with soft wax, students will create multiple projects. Once the jewelry pieces are cast in metal, casting clean-up, final finishing, and bezel stone setting will be covered.

Prior stone setting experience is not necessary, but is beneficial. Familiarity with wax working techniques and casting clean-up is required. Our Welcome to Wax Working classes offer this introduction.

Metal casting for this class is outsourced and will be the responsibility of the student. These resources as well as gemstone sourcing will be covered in class. The BKMW Tool Shop has wax working supplies and a wax working tool kit available for purchase on site.

Please bring to the first class meeting a cabochon measuring 6 – 10 mm in either a round or oval shape in addition to your regular supplies.

Class size 4 – 12 students. Proof of Covid-19 vaccination required. Masks are required to be worn for all studio coursework.

All students receive a 50% discount on hourly bench rentals throughout the duration of their course.
