Carve Diem: Seize the Wax

Class Description

Taught by Sulo Bee

8 week course (meets once a week for 3 hours)

Are you wax curious? Maybe you already know a few things and are looking to experiment with sculpting—or maybe you’ve just been waiting for an excuse to melt something on purpose. Either way, this course is your chance to drip, shape, and sculpt your way into the wonderful world of wax.

Carve Diem: Seize the Wax will explore a variety of wax types— hard, soft, and sticky waxes. Learn how to carve, shape, combine, and layer these materials using hand and rotary tools to create one-of-a-kind forms that can evolve into fully realized pieces.

In addition wax working, dive into mold-making techniques including alginate and two-part silicone to replicate components or entire creations with ease. To compliment our mold making exploration, we will learn how to use wax to carve components directly for mold making.

We’ll also cover how to prepare your waxes for casting. While casting is outsourced and student-directed, a list of local NYC casting houses will be provided.

Students will leave with wax samples, completed forms, molds of selected works, and the skills needed to bring their wax visions into metal.

Seize the wax and get to carving in this exciting class. Carve diem, of course.

Open to all levels. Class size 4 – 12 students.

All students enrolled in this course have access to the studio during open studio hours, at a discounted hourly student rate or a 12 hour bench card. In addition, full-time students have access to free open studio hours on Fridays and Saturdays during their course.
