This show is a reunion, a yearbook, a map and a moment in time. To mark the occasion of Brooklyn Metal Works’ 15th anniversary, In The Gallery will present Here, There, and Everywhere, a juried exhibition of jewelry and objects by members of the Brooklyn Metal Works alumni network. All exhibited works will have been made during or after the artist’s time at Brooklyn Metal Works, creating a visualization of the studio as a nexus for the jewelry and metalsmithing community. The exhibition will have both an in-person, online, and print component, as well as public programming.

Here, There, and Everywhere will be juried by Erin S. Daily and Brian Weissman, co-founders of Brooklyn Metal Works, along with Barbara Paris Gifford, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art, Craft, and Design at the Museum of Arts and Design (MAD).

We are pleased to announce that this exhibition will also be featured in Handwork: Celebrating American Craft 2026, a nationwide semiquincentennial initiative organized by Craft in America showcasing the diversity of the crafts that define the United States.

Eligibility: BKMW Members, faculty, staff, exhibiting artists – past and present! (Students who are/were not also members are not eligible to submit. FAQs

What are you looking for in submissions to the Here, There, and Everywhere open call?

We encourage you to submit whichever works you're most excited about, they do not have to be jewelry or metal objects. The exhibition is meant to trace how BKMW, as a studio and community, has impacted the artists in its network; a good question to ask in order to narrow down your submission pieces is how do these works exemplify your growth as an artist or your connection to Brooklyn Metal Works.

How many pieces can I submit for consideration?

Applicants may submit 1-3 pieces for consideration for display in this juried exhibition. You may submit up to 10 images total of all pieces.

Can I only submit jewelry or metal artworks?

No! Artwork of any medium can be submitted to the open call.

I was involved with Brooklyn Metal Works a while back and I am no longer making jewelry/metal art. Am I only allowed to submit my older works?

No, any work made during or after your time at Brooklyn Metal Works is eligible to submit to the open call. We are hoping to present work from across the timeline of BKMW’s existence. One option is to submit an older work alongside a new work, allowing viewers to see contrast/continuity over time in your practice.

You require applicants to provide pricing for each submitted artwork – does my work have to be available for sale?

No, your submitted artwork does not have to be available for sale, but we encourage you to take the opportunity to support your work! We require pricing for NFS pieces as well in order to accurately insure all exhibited works.

What is the timeline for notification of acceptance?

The deadline to apply to the Here, There, and Everywhere open call is March 15, 2026. All submissions will be reviewed by the jury and decisions will be released in mid April. The exhibition at Brooklyn Metal Works will be on view from June 13 - August 30, 2026.

What other materials will I need to be prepared to provide if my application is accepted?

If accepted, applicants will be asked to provide a headshot, an artist bio, and finalized statement.

Suzanne Sullivan | The Wilderness of Mirrors

April 18 - June 7, 2026

BROOKLYN METAL WORKS

640 Dean St, Brooklyn, NY

“In a wilderness of mirrors. What will the spider do…” (T.S. Eliot’s Gerontion)

In the Gallery at Brooklyn Metal Works is pleased to announce Suzanne Sullivan’s solo exhibition, The Wilderness of Mirrors. On view April 18th to June 7th, this installation of new hand-built porcelain works by the artist takes its name from an infamous memo by James Angleton, the CIA’s notorious Cold War-era chief of counter-espionage, who described spy operations as a “wilderness of mirrors” – “that myriad of stratagems, deceptions, artifices … an ever fluid landscape where fact and illusion merge.”

In making these pieces, Sullivan has stepped into the world of double agents and clandestine operatives, of secret codes and paranoia. Sullivan revels in the surreal and foggy atmosphere of spies, the setting in which one is able to fluidly maneuver between the practical and the make-believe. Enigmas and chaos, clues and games to solve: the vernacular of espionage allows Sullivan to play with the questions that inspire her practice and to rethink her work’s allegiances. Is this useful? Is this just for fun? What is real? What is surreal? With her signature fantastical porcelain creations, Sullivan has crafted her own wilderness of mirrors for both reflection and interrogation.

The Wilderness of Mirrors opens In the Gallery at Brooklyn Metal Works on Saturday, April 18th  with a free public reception from 7 - 9 pm. The exhibition is organized by Brooklyn Metal Works in collaboration with the artist.

Suzanne Sullivan was born in Portland, Oregon, in 1965, and grew up influenced by the arts and crafts traditions of the Pacific Northwest. She graduated with a BFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 1987. Her ceramics are hand-built and organic in form and feature intricate abstract patterns. She works primarily in porcelain and explores the boundary between functional and non-functional. Since 2018, she has installed numerous installations in various venues and galleries, inspired by themes including Homer’s “Odyssey,” “Æsop’s Fables,” Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales,” and Martin Johnson Heade’s 1871 painting, “Cattleya Orchid and Three Hummingbirds.” Her most recent exhibit – an installation entitled “Initial Singularity,” at The Clay Studio, in Philadelphia, this past spring – was a series of works inspired by “Cosmicomics,” the book of stories by Italo Calvino, the Italian novelist and short story writer. She lives and works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
