Intermediate Engraving: Reckless Decoration

Class Description

Taught by Valerie James.

5 Day intensive (10:30 AM - 5 PM)

Over the course of this five-day intensive, learn how to personalize the practical and conceptual sides of engraving. Build a broader library of lines through engaging with traditional and ornate cuts on copper plates, primarily using hand-push methods of engraving with some access to pneumatic tools.

Reckless Decoration moves through a series of exercises which take conventional motifs even further, each designed to help students find ways of making ornate, decorative engraving their own. Flare, script, classic leaf borders, lightning cuts, and plunge cuts are just some of the building blocks we will cover while experimenting with hands-on mark making. Refresh your graver sharpening and shaping skills, practice engraving over curved surfaces including ring shanks, and learn how to use the right graver for the right job.

This course is ideal for students who have a basic understanding of engraving, have taken an introductory course and are ready for the next steps, or are simply looking to fall back in love with the art.

Class size 4 – 8 students.

There is a tool kit available through our Tool Shop. Materials will be available for pick up during the first class. Students do not need to purchase the kits as a whole if they have certain tools and materials already.
