JEWELRY MECHANISMS

Class Description

Taught by Naama Levit

Many types of jewelry incorporate movement, enabled by handcrafted mechanisms such as locking, snapping, and hooking. While these mechanisms may often go unnoticed, they demand the highest level of craftsmanship in each piece, contributing to its distinctive aesthetic appeal and practicality. In this class, participants will explore techniques for crafting diverse hinging mechanisms, adding sophistication to each jewelry piece.

The first part of the class will be an introduction to the topic by a series of technical demos and sample making. Various techniques, including riveting, wire catches, and interlocking components will be explored. Additionally, different flex shaft tools will be utilized to carve matching components and new soldering skills will be learned. Throughout, emphasis will be placed on supporting the creative process with strategic planning and model making.

The class will then focus on the first project - crafting a silver hoop earring with a hinge using the new knowledge and skills acquired. For the second and final project, participants will plan and fabricate in the jewelry format of their choice, either earrings or bracelet, by incorporating one or more mechanisms.

This class is perfect for anyone who wants to strengthen their understanding of jewelry. Basic jewelry fabrication skills, including soldering and torchwork, is required.

Class size 4 – 12 students.
