Mountmaking Short Course
Class Description

In this Short Course you will learn about the specialized skill of mountmaking for the display of objects. The basics of designing and fabricating a secure mount for an object that you bring to class will be covered. Methods of fabrication will include forming and fitting brass rod and wire, soldering and torchwork, cold connections, and friction fit elements. We will also discuss mount paddings and painting.
Mountmaking 101: The first session of this class will be devoted to lecture and discussion on Thursday 1/22 from 6:30pm - 9:30pm. This lecture will provide a general overview of mountmaking and is required for new students. Students should bring note taking materials.
Mountmaking Intensive: The hands-on studio coursework meets Friday 1/23 from 5:30pm - 8:30pm and Saturday 1/24 from 11:00am - 6:30pm. Bring a handheld object to the class session on Friday for discussion. Students will develop a mount drawing, purchase supplies and begin fabrication. Fabrication will continue on Saturday.
Students will purchase necessary supplies from the BKMW Tool Shop with the supervision of the instructor during the intensive.
Basic metalsmithing skills are required, including high temperature brazing/silver soldering. Our Welcome to BKMW: Jewelry class offers this introduction.

Repeat students are welcome and can bring new objects for mounting.

Please note that the Mountmaking 101 lecture will take place on the fifth floor of Brooklyn Metal Works, which is only accessible by stairs. The Mountmaking Intensive with take place on the second floor.
Class size 4-8 students.
Students will receive a separate confirmation email for each day of the course after registering.
Refunds & Credit
Please email us at info@bkmetalworks.com to withdraw from class. Withdrawals from class more than 7 days prior to the start of the class will receive a full refund for the class minus a 10% processing fee. If cancellation occurs 3-6 days prior to the class, we will provide a 50% refund. Cancellations 48 hours or less receive a 25% refund. Refunds will not be provided for no-shows or same-day cancellations.
We do not refund tuition for classes that students miss due to their own circumstances. There will be no refunds once the class begins in any circumstance, nor can we transfer you to a later semester. Students enrolled in multi-session studio courses (excluding workshops and intensives) may make-up missed class sessions during open studio hours through the duration of the session.
We reserve the right to cancel or discontinue any class, in which case you may choose to receive a refund, apply the class credit towards a different course, or receive a tuition credit for future use. Tuition credits are valid for up to one year. Refunds will be issued within 30 days.
