Signet Ring: Cushion Cut

Class Description

Taught by odette channell

Although signet rings originated as a way of creating a seal or leaving a mark that was unique to the wearer, many variations of the ancient style have arisen over the years. The characteristics that connect the old with the new are the flat tops and tapering sides; design features which set them apart. In this four-week class you will learn to wax carve a modern style signet ring featuring a cushion cut faceted stone.

Practice ways to accurately carve a seat for your stone accounting for the depth while perfectly matching its shape. Explore options to shape and refine the wax that will give your ring its own unique feel. Finally, take the opportunity to set a cushion cut stone into your own cast ring, and familiarize yourself with the nuances that come with that challenge.

Metal casting for this class is outsourced and will be the responsibility of the student.

Level: Beginner to intermediate - previous stone setting and wax carving experience encouraged. Familiarity using a flex shaft is essential.

Class size 4 – 12 students. There is a tool kit available through the BKMW Tool Shop. In addition to course materials, students must bring a notebook and writing utensil.

All students enrolled in this multi-session course will receive free punch cards to support their coursework outside of class time. Punch card amounts are dependent on the length of the class session, see our chart here. These hours can be used during Open Studio and are valid for the duration of the course. Additionally, students have access to discounted hourly student rates and 12-hour bench cards.
