Surface Play

Class Description

Taught by Erin S. Daily

5-week course (meets once a week for 3 hours)

Discover texture and patterning techniques and build signature elements into your designs by going deeper into surface embellishments. Through understanding your alloys and heating processes you can begin to explore these special effects to build a broader design vocabulary using sheet, wire, and foil. These techniques can be practiced and perfected to gain control and ultimately maintain consistent results.

In this course we will go in depth with fusing, reticulation, mark making and keum-boo. You will have the opportunity to work with fine silver, sterling silver, and 24k gold foil. These materials and techniques will enliven your design work, and bring in mixed metal elements to enhance your pieces. The use of gold foil is a low cost way to bring a high karat look to your work.

This is a sample based course, with experimentation and practice being the primary focus. Projects will be outlined for students to embark on if they choose, formatted for rings and pendants.

When pushed in the right ways, these metals are able to do exciting things with often surprising results. If you like texture and patterns in your work, or if you like seeing what torches can do with metal surfaces in a controlled way, this is the course for you.

Open to students with basic metalsmithing fabrication skills.

Class size 4 – 12 students.
